AWARD WINNERS
'Whizz
Education's Maths Teachers' Resource, written by Hilary and
Steve, won the Maths Key Stages 1 and 2 category of the BETT
Awards 2006. The resource, a suite of Maths ICT teaching tools
designed to aid whole class, small group or one-to-one teaching,
beat off stiff competition from large multinational organisations
to win this prestigious education industry award. With double
the number of entries in 2006 compared with 2005, we are delighted
to have an acknowledgement of our commitment to providing the
very best learning tools for children across the UK.'
In 2003 Steve Mills and Hilary Koll won both the
'Secondary Numeracy' category and the 'Overall Excellence' prize
at the Basic Skills Book Awards for materials designed to improve
numeracy skills.

From right to left, Alan Wells (Director of
the Basic Skills Agency), Gwerfyl Pierce Jones
(Director of the Welsh Books Council), Siān Lloyd, Ray Gravell,
Rhodri Owen.
The Awards, arranged by the Basic Skills Agency
and the Welsh Books Council, formed part of the Welsh Assembly
Government's National Basic Skills Strategy.
The Jury was chaired by Glenys Kinnock MEP, who
said of the winning entry 'Fast Forward Maths' by Hilary Koll
and Steve Mills:

"There was a remarkable level of consensus
amongst us about the short- listing and about the choice of
winner. We were fortunate that, around the table, we benefited
from the presence of such a committee of expert individuals.
This was because in our choice of winners we felt we wanted
to aim very high indeed - and to set the standard for the
future. When it came to selecting the overall Excellence Award
winner from amongst all the winners we had identified there
was complete agreement about the choice."
